Funny Bone
(A Feature Presentation)
What is it?
-
‘A failing stand-up comedian struggles to solve the real-life case of his namesake’s disappearance; American folk singer Jim Sullivan.
When a string of misfortune hits their city, can the two men (one imaginary) put an end to all the funny business?’.
-
When he’s not crashing open-mic sets and solving weekly mysteries in the local paper, ‘Slim’ Jim Sullivan dreams-up conversations with real-life folk singer Jim Sullivan (no relation). The singer vanished in the New Mexico desert in 1975 and Jim can’t figure out where he went.
After a particularly bad week of stand-up, Slim uncovers the human remains from a victim of the active serial killer the ‘sandman’.
The two Jims set-out on an odyssey to find the sandman’s real identity, discover what happened to Sullivan in 1975, and most importantly, perform a good set of stand-up comedy’.
-
‘Slim Jim Sullivan’ is a mid-twenties stand-up who lives on the breadline and gets paid pennies for solving petty mysteries.
‘Big Jim Sullivan’ is an internal projection of real-life folk singer Jim Sullivan. He’s stoic, cold and plays a great six-string.
The ‘sandman’ is the mysterious serial killer causing havoc on the city. Cold and unfeeling, brutal.
‘Rosey’ is the pd forensic scientist. When she’s not looking at bones, she’s dodging dinner invites from Slim.
‘Private Mikey’ is a slightly nervous detective for the police.
-
There’s a hunger for stories that deal in real-life true crime and biographies of interesting figures in contemporary history. On-top of that, there is nothing scarier than a mystery that can’t be solved.
‘Funny Bone’ is a genre-blend of true-crime, mystery and real-life biography, of a man that was hardly known. It’s important that art exists to not only convey an entertaining concept, but to shine a light on important people who history may have forgotten.
